Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Croatia, as well as worldwide -- and yet many cases of heart disease may be treated and prevented through simple lifestyle changes, such as getting regular physical activity, eating a balanced diet, as well as reducing alcohol consumption and quitting smoking. To learn more about cardiovascular disease, please visit the website of World Heart Day.
Cardiac arrest is also the most frequent cause of sudden death on the pitch among football players. For years, HNS's Medical Committee has organized regular seminars on cardiopulmonary resucitation for all national team doctors, as well as doctors of first- and second-tier clubs. On this year's World Heart Day, the Committee also published their goal to provide education on reanimation to a wider base of football doctors, physiotherapists, and other personnel in Croatia through collaboration with county football associations.
The Croatian Football Federation also marked World Heart Day through a collaboration with St. Catherine Hospital. Cardiologist dr. Jasmina Ćatić and nurse Marina Žanić visited HNS offices on September 28 in order to perform blood pressure checks for all staff members of the NA.
Additionally, HNS also helped organize a football and art workshop for kids in Sibinj, which combined two activities: World Heart Day and UEFA's Grassroots Week. The main goal of the workshop was to educate youngsters on the importance of frequent physical activity and a balanced diet in maintaining one's health.
World Heart Day was also supported by a number of clubs in the Croatian First Division, including Dinamo, Osijek, and Rijeka:
