On Monday, national team captain Luka Modrić became Croatia's first Ballon d'Or winner, saying that the best things never come easy, and HNS president Davor Šuker congratulated the best player in the world.

Luka Modrić

"This is a unique feeling. I am truly happy, proud, and honoured. It is difficult to put it in words, and I would like to thank everyone who helped me to reach this moment - my teammates and coaches in Real Madrid and Croatia national team, as well as my family, including my children, who always provide help. To win Ballon d'Or is more than a childhood dream, it is a privilege to lift this trophy. It's incredible to succeed Messi and Ronaldo, a confirmation that I have done something memorable on the pitch. It's a pleasure to be in this company, I'm still trying to get used to it. The key is in hard work, persistence, and self-belief. The best things never come easy"

Davor Šuker

"It is beautiful to see Luka receiving the award for the best player in the world once again. He has deserved it after everything he has done for Real Madrid, and especially for Croatia, leading the national team to historic World Cup Final. This is a recognition of his talent, knowledge, and skills, as well as his unbreakable character - the foundation of his career both on and off the pitch. This award, by a French newspaper and ahead of French internationals, Messi, and Ronaldo, says more than enough about Luka's impression. I congratulate him for all the achievements and all the effort invested. This is a brilliant end of the best year in Croatian football, an award for the support of his family, and moreover for his teammates and coaches. All of us in Croatian football are proud of him - his style, competitive spirit, humility, and hard work make Luka a great inspiration for future generations. Let us hope there is a new Luka coming up, and until then - hats off to our captain, the best in the world!"
