In the first two matches in qualifying Group 6, Croatia beat Turkey 10:0 and Armenia 8:0, awaiting the well-known opponent from Slovakia in high spirits. However, Slovakia also collected the maximum of six points and proved to be a very hard nut to crack.
A tense encounter saw Croatia take a two-goal lead, with Marinović and Grcić scoring in the first half.

Slovakia then came back: Višvader and Drahovsky leveled the score in 32nd and 34th minute.
However, Mato Stanković's men had an even quicker response. Just 14 seconds after the equalizer, Jelovčić found the net to make it 3:2. The Slovaks came charging in the final minutes, but Croatia stood firm to celebrate third victory and third Euro berth in a row. Slovakia will enter the play-offs.
